Union donates car

by Jarrett Crowe

For Jan Beadnell, finding transportation just to the grocery story or a doctor’s appointment can be a challenge. She is both a volunteer and client of the Four Leaf Clover Seniors Independence Club transportation service. The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union recently donated a brand new Chevrolet Cruze to help the club transport senior citizens to appointments or to get groceries.

Beadnell, who has been using the service since it started about two years ago,  said the program and the volunteer drivers are  very helpful.

“I find that after a while you become friends with the drivers because you see them fairly frequently. They’ll help with shopping and it really is very, very helpful in having this (donated) car make a big difference,” said Beadnell.

The service is not just driving from point A to B, but also aims to improve  the quality of life for  senior citizens by allowing them to maintain their independence and their connection to the community, which can be difficult without a car. .

“I’ve heard stories from some people that they don’t simply go to the doctor and don’t get out into the community enough. That in itself can create another problem which is isolation and a lack of connection to the community,” said Jennifer Tallentire, coordinator of Four Leaf.

Trevor Morin, SGEU Local 1101 (Regina) president, handed the keys over to the club on Oct. 24. He said SGEU wanted to benefit the pioneers that helped build the province.

“We wanted to find a way to help them and make their lives a bit easier, make them a little more mobile,” said Morin. “We thought it was a good match. Giving  (Four Leaf Clovers) a car and giving them an opportunity to drive seniors around and get them to doctors appointments or to the mall is a good thing.”

Beadnell said  the donation will not not only benefits the seniors who utilize the service, but also the club itself.

“With SGEU making the donation, it indicates their acceptance of the fact of what we’re doing is important in the community and that’s very valuable to us,” said Beadnell.
