More safety training for temporary foreign workers needed

With temporary foreign workers currently employed at over 400 businesses across the province, some organizations are looking at ways to improve safety training for new Canadians in the workplace.

Jim Bence of the Saskatchewan Hospitality Safety Association says that “not a lot” is done when it comes to safety training for new Canadians in the hospitality industry, a sector which frequently hires temporary workers.

Fourth-year student Kristen McEwen's photo essay “Old Tyme Harvest for Hunger” received a Premier Award for Best Photo Essay (circulation up to 3,999) at the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards in April. U of R journalism students also picked up the 'Best in Saskatchewan' award at this year's Yorkton International Film Fesitval for 'Her Father's Land,' produced by Tiffany Cassidy and directed by Derek Cornet.
